Behind The Lens: Photographer Jasmin Rogge Shares the Story of Tasteful Nudes.

1. Can you remember the first time you saw a nudibranch or sea slug? What did you think when you encountered one for the first time?

About 18 years ago, when I was very new to diving, I saw my first nudibranch in the Red Sea. My guide pointed it out, and I had no idea what I was looking at. I had never seen anything like that before.

Getting closer and observing what was in front of me opened my horizon to a whole new world. I immediately fell in love with the whole group of marine gastropod mollusks.

2. Your photography of nudis and sea slugs is breathtaking. Can you share the story behind capturing some of them and what made it so special?

Thank you! Each encounter with a nudibranch I’ve never seen before feels incredibly special. I’m always scanning the reef, hopeful that I’ll spot one of these tiny creatures—preferably one that’s completely new to me. It’s like a treasure hunt, and the excitement of discovery never fades.

Before diving, I often train my eye by studying nudibranch ID books specific to the area I’ll be exploring. This preparation adds an extra layer of anticipation, making each sighting even more rewarding.

My favorite story is the one about the blue dragon. We were anchored with our sailboat at a very remote island in Panama. We turned our underwater light on after sunset, and after dinner, we checked to see what was attracted by the light. I was blown away to see more than 50 blue dragons floating on the surface, hunting for the krill that was all around our boat. It was such a rare sight that I had never heard about it before and didn’t even know they existed in Panama. We were all so excited and grateful to witness that.

You can find sea slugs in most places in the world, but some locations are a nudibranch heaven. The pictures in the calendar were taken in Panama, various islands in Indonesia, the Sea of Cortez, and Dominica.

4. What made you want to focus specifically on nudibranchs? What fascinates you most about these delicate sea slugs?

I was drawn to nudibranchs because they embody the beauty and diversity of marine life in such a unique way. These delicate sea slugs, with their vibrant colors, unique forms, and intricate patterns, remind us of the wonders hidden beneath the surface. Each encounter feels like a glimpse into a fantastical world, revealing the incredible diversity of nature’s design.

5. Do you ever plan dives around specific marine species? Are there any species that you dream of photographing but haven’t yet?

Absolutely! I often plan dives around specific marine species, which sometimes drives my husband a bit crazy as we travel to the other side of the world just to see a particular creature.

There are still several species on my wish list that I dream of witnessing, like the blanket octopus, which is primarily found during blackwater dives in the Philippines, the psychedelic frogfish in Ambon (Indonesia), and the great hammerhead in the Bahamas. Each of these unique animals offers a new opportunity to capture their beauty and share their story.

The beauty of photographing nudibranchs, compared to other marine creatures, is that they don’t move very quickly, making them relatively easy to capture once you find them.

The real challenge lies in locating them in the first place. Some species are rare and absolutely tiny, which adds an extra layer of difficulty.

7. As a skilled diver and photographer, what people don’t often realize is that capturing certain species requires both underwater photography expertise and dive skills. How do you balance these two when photographing such small creatures?

My top priority is always to minimize any negative impact on the reef and its inhabitants. I never take a picture unless I’m confident I won’t touch the reef or disturb marine life. I keep my light as low as possible and try to avoid using a flash. If I do use it, I limit myself to one or two attempts before moving on. It’s essential to respect the creatures and their environment.

It’s disheartening to see some photographers, especially those just starting out, prioritize getting the perfect shot over protecting the ecosystems they love. Once, I was diving with a well-known photographer from Florida, though I won’t name her, and she had such a huge camera setup that she struggled to handle. To make matters worse, her guide staged her shots by moving creatures around and setting everything up for the perfect picture.

It was sad to see that approach, especially when the focus should be on capturing authentic moments while respecting marine life. I hope to inspire a more mindful approach, where capturing the beauty of these animals goes hand in hand with ensuring their habitats remain healthy and thriving.

8. Do you think underwater photography might contribute to ocean conservation?

Absolutely, I believe underwater photography can play a significant role in ocean conservation, but it’s essential to approach it responsibly.

On one hand, as I just pointed out in my last answer, unskilled divers can inadvertently cause harm to fragile ecosystems, such as coral reefs, by disturbing marine life or damaging habitats while trying to capture the perfect shot. This highlights the need for education and awareness among photographers about the impact of their actions in such delicate environments.

On the other hand, when done thoughtfully, underwater photography can raise awareness and appreciation for marine life. By showcasing the beauty and diversity of creatures like nudibranchs, we can inspire a deeper connection to the ocean. When people see the intricate details and vibrant colors of these animals, they may feel compelled to protect their habitats.
The fine line is about balance: promoting a sense of wonder and responsibility. If we can encourage photographers to be mindful and respect the environments they’re exploring, we can harness the power of visual storytelling to advocate for conservation efforts and inspire a collective commitment to protecting our oceans.

9. Has spending so much time underwater with marine life, particularly nudibranchs, changed your perspective on ocean conservation?

Yes, spending time underwater has definitely shaped my perspective on ocean conservation, particularly regarding the challenges faced by coral reefs. The broader changes have been striking. I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of coral bleaching, the destruction of reefs, and invasions like the crown-of-thorns starfish.

It’s heartbreaking to see how fragile these ecosystems are and how they can be impacted by both natural and human activities. Issues like poor buoyancy control among divers and a lack of respect for the environment can further exacerbate these problems.
It’s a reminder that every action counts, and we all have a role to play in protecting these vital ecosystems.

Seeing the beauty of marine life amidst these challenges has made me even more passionate about raising awareness and advocating for the health of our oceans.

10. What do you hope people take away from seeing the photos of these beautifully intricate creatures in your calendar?

I hope that those who purchase my calendar find joy in having these beautiful creatures displayed on their walls. Capturing these special moments through photography allows me to share that joy and wonder with others.

My aim is to inspire a sense of wonder and responsibility towards our oceans, encouraging viewers to engage with and advocate for conservation. By fostering this connection, I hope to drive positive change and remind everyone of the vital role all creatures play in maintaining the health of our planet and keeping things in balance.
