Behind The Lens: Photographer James Layh Shares The Story of Indigo Dreams
1. What inspired you to capture the incredible marine life of the Pacific Ocean? What draws you to photographing these majestic creatures?
The draw is to be in the water with them, the photographs are an important outcome of that goal as they allow me to capture the memory and the feeling of calm and joy I get from sharing space with so many of these awesome creatures.
2. When diving, do you ever have a specific creature in mind that you want to photograph, like sea turtles or reef fish?
Sometimes I have a specific creature in mind that I’d like to capture but that usually is only when we are snorkeling in a spot that is known to be a common hang out of a particular creature.
For example, we knew the bay where we were anchored in Tahuata (Marquesas) was a frequent manta ray feeding ground, so I was really on the watch for them. It took a while but my patience was rewarded and I was treated several times with a spectacular dance that lasted close to an hour at each encounter
3. When you were in the Galapagos, were you surprised by how unafraid the wildlife is? How does that change the dynamic when you’re photographing them?
I had heard this before, that some of the marine life there really had little fear of humans but it was a little surprising nonetheless.
You get used to it fairly quickly and because they are so comfortable with you there, it generally means extended observations and encounters – which I love.
4. Some of the marine life in the calendar, like the Galapagos Green Turtle or the Manta ray, can be elusive or found in specific locations. How do you plan your dives to capture these rare moments?
There is so much information online now, which is a good way to start researching various locations with good underwater life, but I find talking with people in the local community to be the best way to find the lesser-known spots.
I tend to ask as many people as I can and when I start to hear the same answer I know there is likely something great to be explored.
5. Can you share what it was like the first time you encountered some of the creatures featured in the Indigo Dreams calendar, such as blacktip reef sharks of the famous Fakarava wall of sharks?
Fakarava is an amazing place. We would spend almost the entire tidal cycle in and around the south pass watching the vibrant marine life and were able to go back several times. Being able to slow down and just absorb the coral and all the marine life my sense of awe continued to deepen.
At first I was a bit nervous with so many sharks around but that quickly dissipated as I just relaxed into my surroundings to take it all in.
6. Your photograph of the humpback whale is stunning. Can you tell us the story behind that shot? How close were you to the whale?
In French Polynesia, it’s mandatory to go with a licensed tour operator who holds a special permit to take guests on a whale excursion. The guides really know the behavior of the whales and when it’s ok to enter the water with them.
On this day, the whales had been moving a lot and had just dove down when we spotted them. At the direction of our guide, we carefully entered the water a few hundred meters where we thought they might surface and then proceeded to swim in the general direction.
It seemed like only seconds passed when we all started to see the dark figures rising from the depths. There were 3 juvenile males who decided to approach the group. I was on the outer edge of the group when one of the whales turned towards me and started swimming in my direction. I was mesmerized. I froze and just floated there as this beautiful creature glided by, not more than a couple of meters away, looking me right in the eye. He paused for just a moment, and then continued on his way. It was a magical encounter I will never forget.
7. Have you ever been so in awe of what you were witnessing that you lost track of time or your surroundings?
I tend to get lost in my surroundings whenever I’m underwater and can easily spend hours in spot taking in all the marine life and activity. I do find that when I’m swimming with turtles, like in Aruba, or the Galapagos, the longer I’m there the more they seem to become at ease with me, and time stands still. It never gets old.
8. Having traveled across remote islands and national parks in the Pacific, you’ve had the opportunity to document wildlife in relatively untouched environments. What does this mean for you as a photographer and conservationist?
I’ve witnessed first hand how marine conservation areas can have a positive impact on restoring marine life habitats and I think we need to continue to push for more of this. In the sailing community, there can sometimes be a tendency to feel burdened by additional regulation and bureaucracy involved with visiting a marine conservation areas but I’d rather deal with the bureaucracy and support their efforts so that some of these untouched environments will remain that way.
9. Do you feel that your photography plays a role in inspiring others to take action to preserve marine life? How do you hope Indigo Dreams influences its audience?
I hope it gives people pause to think about how they treat our reefs and oceans, and realize that if we protect them and honor them the kind of experiences I have had can continue to be accessible for everyone.
10. Has spending so much time with marine life made you more aware of the need to protect their habitats?
There is nothing more sobering than seeing a piece of plastic caught in the reef as you float by watching marine life, or observing dramatic coral bleaching and how it can change the marine-scape of a location so quickly. Being able to return to a location multiple times you can start to witness small changes over time and really drive home how fragile these ecosystems can be.
Thanks James. What’s next for you? Do you have any exciting projects or upcoming trips that you’re looking forward to? Is there a particular species, a sea creature that you’re still dreaming of capturing on camera?
We will be exploring Fiji in the coming season and then continuing our way west through South East Asia. Raja Ampat is high on our list of places we’d like to explore and potentially the Philippines. I would love the opportunity to swim with whale sharks and capture them in photos and I’m hopeful this opportunity will present itself as we explore these upcoming areas.
