Reef Fish Guide designation and why

Keep it wild
This fish is definitely one to avoid because it is almost impossible to keep nourished in captivity. Although they are striking specimens to display, they almost always fail to adjust to life in the home aquarium and simply don’t survive in captivity. Although there is no reliable data on capture methods for these fish, they are found in areas where fishing is conducted using destructive methods like cyanide and anecdotal reports are that many, if not all, are collected with cyanide. This information alone makes the ribbon eel a very poor choice for the home hobbyist.

Distribution
Indo Pacific, WesternPacific: east Africa to Tuamotos, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia and the French Polynesia. These eels are found in and around coral reefs and are also found living in lagoons and seaward reefs. They are a secretive species normally hidden in sand or rubble, sometimes with only the head protruding.

Maximum Size
These eels grow to about 3.9 feet (1.2 meters)
